Canadian workplace first aid kits are built to CSA Z1220-17, the national standard for first aid kits in the workplace. It replaced the old province-by-province patchwork with one set of contents, and it is the standard most Canadian employers are now expected to buy against. Every kit we sell is built to it.
Two things decide which kit you need: how risky the work is, and how many people are on shift.

| Type 1 — Personal | Workers who work alone or in isolation, or who don't otherwise have access to a workplace kit. Carried by the individual. |
| Type 2 — Basic | Most workplaces with a low-risk work environment — offices, retail, light commercial. |
| Type 3 — Intermediate | Workplaces with a moderate or high-risk environment. Contains everything in a Type 2 plus additional supplies such as eye pads, cold packs, a tourniquet and splints. |
Size is set by the number of workers on the largest shift, not your total headcount:

Splitting into several smaller kits is allowed and is often the better choice on a spread-out site — a kit two buildings away is a kit nobody reaches in time. Over 100 workers per shift, scale up in the same increments.
The standard doesn't hand you a list of job titles. In practice, offices, retail floors and similar indoor environments sit in the low-risk band and take a Type 2. Anywhere with machinery, sharp tools, heights, chemicals, vehicles or outdoor work usually sits in the moderate-to-high band and takes a Type 3. If your hazard assessment is borderline, the Type 3 is the safer buy — it's the same kit with more in it.
A first aid kit and an AED solve different problems. A kit handles cuts, burns, breaks and bleeding. Sudden cardiac arrest needs a defibrillator, and no first aid kit substitutes for one. If you're outfitting a site from scratch, budget for both — and put them in the same place, clearly signed, so nobody has to think about where to look.
